Nice and soft with happy little balls / Lekker zacht en gezellig met bolletjes.
Pattern notes
Yarn: I used Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Heavyweight, in the color Brick, with needle size 3mm, which is quite tight for that yarn, but very elastic, which is what I wanted.
Needle. I used 3cm circular needles, 40cm circ.
Gauge: : Tried to measure it, but that 3×3 rib can be stretched enormously, and after laying it flat for a while it will be much smaller than after wearing. Any yarn that knits nicely with size 3/3.5cm needles should work fine for babies head.
Size Hat is made for a one year old (app 40cm circ), and should fit her for the next couple of years. It is very flexible. Too heavy for a newborn.
Original pattern: the original rip from Daatje, premium vrijdag member.
Way to work
Band
Cast on 90 stitches on a circular needle, loosely. Knit in 3×3 pattern (purl 3, knit 3) for about 15-20 centimeter.

Straight ahead, now with balls
Start a ball round. Make a ball every third purl-area. So you’ll have five balls at the end of a round. This is how to do it:
Start at the beginning of a round. If you don’t know exactly where it was, it does not matter. Just start where a 3xpurl begins. Now, purl the first purl stitch. Knit into the second purl stitch, but do not drop the stitch. Knit into the back of the stitch, then in the front again, then in the back and then a fifth stitch in the front. Now you can drop that stitch. Turn your work. Purl the five stitches you just made. Turn: knit the five stitches. Turn: purl the five. Turn: knit the five. Turn: purl five. Turn: knit five. You’ll have worked 6 rows. Now, turn the work again, and slip the first four stitches to the left needle, purlwise. Purl the final stitch. Now, move the four stitches you slipped over the knitted stitch, so that you’ll have only one stitch left. Turn the work, and continue in the rib. Work 3k, 3p, 3k, 3p, 3k, and then work another ball in the next 3p area. Continue until you reach the end of the round. (5 balls)
After this ball round, work three rounds in plain 3×3 rib.
Then another ball round
Then three rounds in plain 3×3 rib
Then another ball round
Then three rounds in plain 3×3 rib
And the last normal ball round
Decreasing
Make decreases every other round (lose 10 per decreasing round, two for every 18 stitches: a ball repeat). The final rounds you’ll decrease more, unless you want a pointy hat.
Keep making balls every fourth round. The picture gives the way I made the decreases: first I ate from the knitted ribs just along the ball strip (until one left). Then I took the non-ball purl ribs (until one left). Then the other knitted rib (all at once), and finally (just after the last ball), I took the purl ridge (all at once) where the balls live. See picture.
Finish by getting the yarn twice through the remaining (about) ten loops. Pull firmly, and bury the yarn deeply into the hat.
